lonely not alone

the muted lightening is distant but applauding,
the conversation is polite yet half hearted,
she was kind but to her I was all but forgotten,

I could tell she was lost in hallways.. houses,
that she kept to herself,
she was more than distant,
I wasn’t sure but I knew then that she needed me,

she had a way of making you laugh while she cried,

she held onto her pain like the night when it rains,
goodbyes suited her,
but she never wanted to be alone,

bills accumulate on a desk neglected,
she borrowed more books than she owned,
yet she made me feel like I was the only one,

she had a way of making me feel alive even in her eyes,

she spoke of love like it had never hurt her,
she spoke of lovers like they had never left her,
she was in love with being in love but her heart wasn’t in it,

a beautiful way of forgetting the flaws,
she had a haunting way of climbing my walls,
then she would tell me that I had to love myself first,

she had a way of leaving just as you thought she understood,

she was mysterious but her eyes gave her away,
the phone rang upstairs but I ignored it,
she would smile and I would refrain,

the cat woke me up at 3:41 and for a moment I was lost,
it came back quick,
when I heard her crying and talking on the phone,
it was then I knew she just needed someone.. anyone,

she had a way of being honest but not telling the truth,

she had a way of being engaging but aloof,
I couldn’t tell her that she was lonely not alone,
she knew that she was getting old in an destructive way,

the lightening had faded but it was now raining,
Brent Best could tell my love was waning,
she didn’t say she hated me she just never stop complaining,

she had a way of making it known that it was time for her to go,
